Das Vorkommen im Bayerischen Wald ist bekannt, jedoch gibt es neben Schätzwerten aus Zufallsbeobachtungen keinerlei Hinweise zur Größe der Brutpopulation oder dem Bestandstrend und potentielle Gefährdungsursachen. Daher können derzeit kaum zuverlässige Aussagen über die Population getroffen werden. Hier setzt das aktuelle Forschungsprojekt der Nationalparkverwaltung Bayerischer Wald an.
Mit modernen Methoden soll zunächst die Bestandsgröße ermittelt werden. Potentielle Störgrößen wie etwa Prädatoren, Wintertourismus oder Veränderung der Habitatqualität soll quantifiziert und mit Angaben über die Stressbelastung der Auerhühner in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Forschungsaktivitäten sind dabei explizit nicht-invasiv. Es ist möglich aus Kot- und Federproben alle relevanten Daten wie etwa genetische Merkmale (Genotypisierung) oder hormonelle Stressbelastung (Metaboliten des Stresshormons Corticosteron) zu messen.
